Security Guard Shot at BEL Compound

In March 2019, after nearly eight years in prison, 31-year-old Michael Pook, along with his two siblings, was freed of a murder charge for the death of cabdriver Errol ”Lighter” Ferguson, but this week he is fighting for his life at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) after someone tried to kill him.

Pook, currently working as a security guard, was shot multiple times around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday January 12th, while on duty at the BEL compound located at the corner of Poinsettia and Tibruce streets in Belize City.

Pook reported to Police that he was inside the compound when someone approached him and fired in his direction before fleeing the scene. Pook was immediately transported to the KHMH for treatment, and is listed in critical condition.

At the Police Department’s bi-weekly press conference on Monday, Officer Commanding the Crimes Investigation Branch in Belize City, ASP Alejandro Cowo revealed that the investigation into Pook’s shooting was still in its preliminary stage, but that investigators were looking into Pook’s criminal past to determine whether it might be connected to the attack on him.

According to Cowo, investigators were out in the area trying to see whether they could find surveillance cameras that might have captured the suspect or the shooting in progress.
