Tuesday, April 30, 2019 –
A retired American national from Wisconsin, USA who was on a family vacation on Ambergris Caye died on Sunday morning while snorkeling near the Mexico Rocks Marine Reserve north of the island.

According to reports, a preliminary medical assessment by doctors indicate that Lora Brooks Peterson, 67, had a heart attack in the water.

Family members allegedly told a media outlet in San Pedro that Peterson did not show any signs of illness prior to going on the snorkeling expedition, however, while in the water she started to panic and then became unconscious. Efforts were made to resuscitate her but those were fruitless. A post mortem examination expected to be conducted during the week on Peterson’s body will certify her official cause of death.

It is reported that around 10:20 a.m. on April 28th, Peterson along with family members and a tour guide were snorkeling about six miles away from the island when she suddenly became unconscious in the water. She was immediately taken from out of the water by the tour guide who put her in the boat and attempted CPR but was unsuccessful.

The group then sought the assistance of Rickilee Response and Rescue Team who responded and transported Peterson to a private clinic on Pescador Drive where she was declared dead at 11:25am.
