A family which lives on the West bank of the river in Esperanza Village in the Cayo District narrowly escaped unthinkable tragedy this morning when their three year old son, Mark David Landero, 3, almost died during what should have been a routine crossing of the river in their canoe.

According to reports, David Landero, 38, and his wife Amy Cunil were crossing the river around 9:00am this morning in a dorey with their three children to attend a funeral. But midway across the river, the dorey started to sink and all five were thrown into the river. Landero and Cunil managed to grab on to two of their children and get them to the riverbank, but the third, Mark, was swept away by the current before they could reach him.

When San Ignacio Police responded to the scene minutes after, they found an individual on the bank of the river giving CPR to the child, who he had reportedly pulled from the river just minutes before. Sources say that the child was unresponsive, but was rushed to the Loma Luz Hospital where doctors managed to resuscitate him.

The child has been transported to the KHMH in Belize City for further treatment, but sources say doctors at the Loma Luz Hospital believe that his chances for survival and a full recovery are good.
