What is believed to be the second attempt on the life of Ladyville resident Jeffrey Elijio in just a matter of two weeks has this week spilled over to his family and has resulted in his 70-year-old mother being shot in her right shoulder.

The latest victim of what is suspected to be a targeted attack on Jeffrey Elijio from Ladyville has left Margaret Elijio hospitalized in a stable condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City.

Around 10:00 p.m. on March 14th Elijio was inside her home on Marage Road with other family members when multiple shooters arrived at the location and opened fire on the plycem structure.

Mrs. Elijio told Police that she was inside her bedroom when she heard two loud noises followed by loud bangs coming from the direction of her front door. The woman said that she went into the living room to make checks and when she returned to her bedroom she again heard more loud bangs, felt a burning sensation and realized that she had been shot.

Shortly after, Police arrived on the scene and transported the elderly woman to the hospital. Authorities found four bullet holes in her front door.

Mrs. Elijio’s home is located near where her son Jeffrey Elijio lives. Two weeks ago, Jeffrey was also shot to his abdomen by two masked men who entered his home and opened fire at him. Luckily he managed to escape the gunman’s wrath, but the culprits reportedly threatened Jeffrey’s common-law wife and three children who were inside the home.

Police say that since then Jeffrey had been hospitalized due to his injury and on Thursday morning he was discharged from the hospital. Authorities, however, clarified that while they suspect that the gunmen had returned looking for Jeffrey he was not inside his mother’s home at the time of the shooting.

Following Jeffrey’s shooting his family had told the Reporter that they did not have a clue as to why he was being targeted and this week ASP Alejandro Cowo, OC, CIB, explained that they are also having difficulty in trying to establishing a motive – “There are several theories that we have been following. We have approached the family to ask them what they suspect might be causing the shooting, but we have not received much information from them. They are cooperating but only to a certain extent.”

The Elijio family has decline of offer any further comments to the media.
