Belmopan Businessman Shot
March 16
10:00 2019

Businessman Elder Paredes, 36, owner of Chinos Sports Bar situated in Belmopan City, is hospitalized at the Western Regional Hospital in a stable condition recovering from a gunshot wound to his stomach.

Paredes was shot by one of two robbers around 12:30 p.m., on Wednesday, March 13, at his establishment located in the industrial site area of Belmopan. The robbers relieved him of his licensed 9mm pistol, an undisclosed amount of cash and the DVR drive which captured footage of the broad daylight attack.

Police say that the two men, described as being of dark complexion, entered the bar around midday and were socializing under the guise of normal customers. The men, however, pounced on Paredes when he went outside to pay a delivery truck for drinks which they were in the process of delivering.

Both men reportedly used the opportunity and pulled out their firearms and held him up at gunpoint. One of the men fired a single shot at Parades which hit him in the stomach area. After relieving him of his personal items, the men made an attempt to break a lock off a deposit box which was in the delivery truck, but their attempt was unsuccessful and they fled the scene on a black motorcycle.

During the time that the men were staking out Paredes at the bar, they were captured on surveillance footage, however when they left they took that evidence with them.

While that strategy might have frustrated to some extent Police investigation into the robbery, ACP Joseph Myvett says that they are still closing in on the men. He told the media that “There are other surveillance cameras in that area which Police are currently looking at in trying to determine their identity. We do have some suspects that we are seeking, however, they are just known to us by aliases.”

Police could not confirm whether the men were targeting the delivery truck or the bar owner but have confirmed that the victim did not recognize any of them.
