The trial of the decade – the Mason murder trial – got underway on Tuesday, and by the close of today, had seen eight persons take the witness stand for the prosecution. This is out of a total of 37 that DPP, Cheryl-lyn Vidal has advised the Court may be called by the Crown.

The most compelling evidence given so far occurred at the start of the trial, when David Dodd, an 88 year-old former resident of Belize, testified via Skype video conference from Texas, USA, that he and another Pastor, Alvis Wright, had accompanied the deceased, Pastor Llewellyn Lucas to Mason’s home on the afternoon of Friday, July 15, 2016 where Lucas was supposed to collect monies that Mason had reportedly owed him. Dodd said that when they got to the Mason mansion on Intelco Hill, things went far differently than was anticipated.

Dodd said that Lucas went up a flight of stairs and he and Wright were thereafter invited inside by two men. They were led to a bathroom downstairs and were ordered to shut up. They were bound, gagged and blindfolded and then flung in the pan of a vehicle and driven to a ranch owned by Mason on the George Price Highway, then instructed to leave. Dodd said that the last time he saw Lucas was when Lucas ascended the stairs to the Mason mansion.

Also on Tuesday, Mason’s former house maid, Magdalena Teul, told the Court also via Skype video, that she had served Mason and Lucas beverages around a table that afternoon and that the two men conversed for a while, but that thereafter, she did not see them for the rest of the day.

Sergeant Solomon Westby, who was assigned to the Belmopan Police Formation at the time, was at Sancho’s Bar in Belmopan sometime thereafter when he spotted Mason and others. He said that knowing Mason was wanted for questioning, he radioed the Police Station for back-up and they carried out a search of Mason’s Ford F-150 pick-up truck, where, after much effort to open the cover of the pan, Lucas’ head was found in a crocus sack inside a pigtail bucket in the pan of the truck. The keys for the vehicle were reportedly found inside the bar after Mason had said he could not locate them.

Today PC Avery Flores, a member of the Mobile Interdiction Team (MIT) when the murder occurred, told the Court that he was also a part of the search that unearthed the human head.

On Wednesday, Pastor Richard Smith testified that Mason called him on his phone and asked him to call off the police who were searching his truck. He said Mason asked of him: “Can you tell the police that you and I are okay?”

Smith said that he recognized Mason’s voice and that they knew each other because Mason had also owed him money for work that he had done.

Justice Antoinette Moore is presiding over the case against Mason and the four other defendants, Ashton Vanegas, Ernest Castillo, and brothers Keiron and Terrence Fernandez.

Lucas was a Pastor from Dangriga and the rest of his body was believed to have been burnt at the ranch where Dodd and Wright were taken and later released.
