A domestic dispute has left a Belize Defense Force soldier with a charge for an indictable offense, after he burned $600 worth of panties belonging to his common law wife.

Yusuf Bilal Jr, 36, appeared in Belize City Magistrates Court on Wednesday to answer to a charge of arson for the burnt panties belonging to Helen Gentle, 57. The Court did not take a plea because of the nature of the offense, but granted Bilal bail in the sum of $2,000.

His case will be trialed in the Supreme Court, where he is scheduled to appear on December 12.

Gentle notified Police that Bilal accused her of having an affair via text message and told her that he was going to set fire to four dozen of her Victoria’s Secret underwear because she was modeling them for other men and not for him. She did not appear in Court for the first instance

Under the Criminal Code, Chapter 131 of the Laws of Belize, Bilal could face up to a year in prison for the offence, however there are several factors that the Court can consider if he is convicted, which may affect the sentence he is given.
