REPORTER: News Staff, -

A routine checkpoint on the Phillip Goldson Highway in front of the Sandhill Police Station on September 8th was able to sniff out two Benque Viejo residents with US$65,000 concealed inside the dashboard and gearshift of a taxi they were in.

Shortly after their capture, driver of the vehicle Walter Hercules, 35, and David Cruz, 25, who Police say were headed in the direction of Orange Walk were jointly charged with two counts of money laundering and one count of concealment.

On Tuesday, September 11th, OC of the Eastern Division’s Crime Investigation Branch, ASP Alejandro Cowo, explained that “Police were conducting checkpoint at the Sand Hill police Station and stopped a vehicle driven at the time by Hercules and accompanied by Cruz. An initial search of the vehicle inside the paneling of the dashboard led to the discovery of a substantial amount of US dollars in various denominations and a further search of the gearshift of the vehicle led to the discovery of another amount. After the search was concluded police found a total of US$65,000.”

Cowo also confirmed that the operation was one of many that were ongoing countrywide, but noted that the men were singled out since authorities suspect that some Benque residents who traverse the Phillip Goldson Highway are involved in the trafficking of firearms and other illicit substances. That led Police to conduct a thorough search of the vehicle.

Police sources say that while in custody the men did not explain the presence of the cash and when they were questioned about the money’s concealment both individuals chose to exercise their right to remain silent.

Authorities additionally stated that while they suspect where the money came from, they are still investigating its destination and have confirmed that they will be handing over the cash to the Financial Intelligence Unit until the Court case against the men is concluded.
