Tourist Slashed During Home Invasion

A Canadian tourist asleep inside a motel room at the Mora Laguna Resort located on northern Ambergris Caye was rudely awakened by an intruder who attacked her and stabbed her four times in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Luckily for Christina Potvin, 41, the injuries were not life-threatening and she was rushed to the San Pedro Polyclinic at around 4:30 a.m. where she was treated and later released that day for wounds doctors classified as grievous harm.

On Tuesday the Reporter spoke to Potvin who described her near death experience – “I had a head contusion, a few small sutured wounds on my face, two to my chest and one to my upper left arm. The chest x-ray showed no serious internal damage beyond muscle bruising. I will be fine though I look like hell and there was some pain. But I miraculously survived a direct attack by a person with a knife. I don’t know who or why, but here I am and I am thankful.”

Mrs. Potvin told the Reporter that she was asleep when she was alerted by a noise in her motel room. When she opened her eyes she realized that a man was standing beside her bed. She struggled with the male person in an effort to get him outside and that was when the individual took out a knife and inflicted the stab wounds to her body.

In their official report Police listed the incident as an aggravated burglary, but could not establish whether anything was stolen from the room. Potvin, however, told the Reporter that she believes that the intruder escaped with some of her cash.

Potvin says that she has been living in San Pedro for three years and even opened a business two weeks ago on the island. Despite the attack, she told us that “apart from physically restricting my movements, my opinion of Belize and the island has not changed. This could have happened anywhere.”

Potvin says that her attacker entered the apartment by breaking one of the kitchen windows. At the time of the invasion Potvin’s kids were sleeping on the sofa in the living room. Police are yet to make an arrest on the tourist.
