On Thursday morning Police confirmed that based on statements and descriptions given by witnesses, they have detained one man, a resident of Mahogany Heights, for questioning in the callous murder of world renowned British filmmaker Richard Foster, 74. The well-loved resident of Mile 28.5 on the Phillip Goldson Highway was found dead Tuesday night in the Rivera Area of Belmopan, the same day he was reported missing and one day after Police suspect he was abducted from his home.

According to Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, ACP Joseph Myvett, at “around 8:00pm on August 7th, Belmopan Police responded to a call of a body behind the Rivera Area. Upon arrival they observed a clear complexion male person dressed in shorts pants with his feet hanging in the creek, apparently dead. Upon inspection of the body, it was observed to have several stab wounds as well as injuries to the head. The person was later identified as Richard Foster.”

A post mortem examination conducted on the deceased confirmed that he died as a result of traumatic asphyxiation due to multiple stab wounds. Foster was reportedly stabbed as many as ten times.

Myvett also confirmed that based on the preliminary investigation, they believe the motive to be robbery, and confirmed that they are currently seeking other persons from mahogany Heights for questioning.

The well-known environmentalist and film producer was officially reported missing on August 7th from his home located near the Belize Zoo on the George Price Highway. Foster’s wife, who is away in the United States for medical treatment, reportedly tried to call her husband at their home at around 7:00 a.m. that day. Following several unanswered calls, she then asked a family friend to check on her husband.

When he arrived at the home that family associate discovered that the door was ajar and that the house was ransacked. Foster, his vehicle, a 9mm pistol and a 12 gauge shotgun were missing.

At around 5:00 that evening Foster’s vehicle was found abandoned near a water reservoir in Mahogany Heights. The vehicle had what appeared to be blood stains in the rear passenger seat.

The Police are still trying to tie together the chain of events, since Foster’s vehicle was found in one location and his body at another. Myvett noted that investigators are trying to determine where Foster was killed, since a minimal amount of blood was found inside the house. At the scene where the body was discovered, no substantial amount of blood was present and there were also minimal traces of blood inside the vehicle.

The senseless tragedy has shocked colleagues, friends and associates in the environmental, wildlife and film community. Foster was by all accounts a kind man that dedicated decades of his life for the protection of Belize’s wildlife and the promotion of Belize.

Among the many environmental and conservation organizations which issued statements following news of Foster’s murder was the Belize Zoo which stated, “TBZ is grappling with the senseless tragedy of the murder of Richard Foster; a devastating blow to the heart of our organization, and to Belize on a whole.”

Over the years Foster worked closely with the Belize Zoo and had filmed a number of documentaries featuring Belize for the Natural Geographic and the BBC.
