A collision between a passenger bus and a motorcyclist on the Hummingbird Highway over the weekend has claimed the life of a Dangriga resident and father of one.

The victim, identified as Albert Idelfonso, 23, was found at the scene of the accident between miles 20 and 21 with severe head and body injuries around 5:20pm on Sunday, July 15th, 2018.

Police investigation into the accident identified the driver of the passenger bus as Ian Hines. He told them that while driving his bus from a south to north direction on the highway he observed a motorcyclist driving toward him attempting to overtake two vehicles.

Hines said that the motorcyclist was unable to make it back into his lane in time and slammed head-on into the front of the bus. The bus driver further stated that while he tried to apply brakes he was unable to avoid the collision.
Authorities reveal that when they responded to the scene they observed the bus with extensive damages to its front left portion, while the wrecked motorcycle was on the opposite side of the highway.

Idelfonso was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
There are no reports to indicate whether Hines was issued with a Notice of Intended Prosecution by Police, but that would be protocol in such an incident.
