Gang leaders agree to keep the peace

By: Marion V. Ali

Leaders from a number of Belize City’s major gangs have agreed to stop the gun violence that has risen in some areas of Belize City. The agreement took place during a discussion on Friday afternoon at Old Belize to resolve the conflict among them. That conflict has resulted in the loss of lives of three young men in as many weeks on the south side of the city.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow told reporters on Friday that while the Government is talking to the gang leaders, it is also equipping the Belize Police Department with additional weapons and radios to more effectively deal with the problem.

The gangs represented included George Street, PIV, Jane Usher Boulevard, Louise Bevans Crips, Victoria Street and Supal Street and they met in the presence of Senior Superintendent and Deputy Commander of Eastern Division, Edward Broaster.
