Latin Post, an American-based media house has released an article praising the Actun Tunichil Muknal (Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre) in Cayo.
The online media platform which caters to over 3.5 million visitors, the majority being the Latino population of the United states, published a piece on September 13 entitled “National Geographic’s Top ‘Sacred Places’ List: Belize Ancient Mayan Cave Ranks First”.
Apart from making reference to the cave ranking first in the prestigious National Geographic magazine, the article is packed with positive messages about the cave and Belize, giving the country more positive press to its largest tourism product consumer.
“ATM is an authentic experience and an incredible journey to the Mayan Underworld that I will never forget,” wrote LP’s Melissa Castellanos.
Actun Tunichil Muknal was honoured in 2008 by National Geographic magazine in its book highlighting 500 of the best places in the world which are considered sacred ground.
In 2012 the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) placed a ban on tourists taking cameras into the cave after a visitor accidentally dropped a camera which damaged an artefact that was thousands of years old.
