Accident kills 12-year-old-girl, police detain driver

The Belize Police Department have a man detained pending investigation into an accident that killed one child and left several more injured this weekend.

Police say that they detained 28-year-old construction worker Didier Novelo of San Mateo San Pedro, following an accident between miles 59 and 60 on the George Price Highway. Novelo reported lost control of his vehicle while driving from Belmopan in the direction of San Ignacio.

Novelo reportedly lost control of his white Ford Explorer and flipped several times causing extensive damage to the vehicle and causing the multiple body injuries that lead to the death of 12-year-old Lelany Chan. Doctors at the Western Regional Memorial Hospital pronounced the girl dead on arrival and admitted another passenger, Joslie Johnson, 20, while unconscious.
Doctors also treated four other passengers, all minors, who had varying injuries. Police are expected to give an update at the scheduled media briefing tomorrow.
