Sharing the good news through sports

Sports Reach, a Christian-based outreach organization is in Belize for a week’s worth of basketball games and missionary work.
The Sports Reach team will play against local selections beginning on Saturday at Birds Isle in Belize City, before travelling to Belmopan, San Ignacio and Dangriga.
The final match features Sports Reach versus Hoop Dreams, the recent champions of the Copa Cancun Tournament.
Director of Sports Reach, Robby Speer, explained that the organization has been conducting mission trips in Belize for years in various sports disciplines.
“Sports is a great way to open doors”, Speer said. “A lot of these guys are not gonna go to church, but they’ll be at the ball game, so we’ll talk to them there.”
Speer underscored that the initiative is important because it gives Belize’s children positive recreation and helps with their spiritual development.
He added that the team will visit several local churches, children’s homes and clinics, doing missionary work.
The organization, which has been operating since 1986, was in country in July working with the junior national soft ball team and left a coach with them to assist with honing their skills.
