The girls of St Catherine’s Academy won the bronze medal in Volleyball at the XVII Central American Junior Scholastic (CODICADER) Games hosted by Guatemala in Quetzaltenango, Mazatenango and Retalhuleu on Friday, September 7.
Sherika Burton also won an individual gold medal as Best Hitter. It was the first time that Belize had medalled in Volleyball since Belize began participating in CODICADER in 2007.
The SCA volleyball girls won the consolation match for third place in five sets over Nicaragua 3-2 at the Mazatenango Sports Complex.
Sherika Burton and Clara Sabal led the attack with the help of Jahshema Saunders and Leandra Betson, hammering kills to balls set by Krystal Bevans and Shanay Casimiro, Nayala Tun relieved Betson, and they had to go to extra points to win the first set: 26-24.
Xiomara Quan, Karina Bernard and Kevanna Sebastian relieved Bevans, Betson and Casimiro in the second set, which Nicaragua won 25-23.
Shameika Franklin relieved Betson in the third set which the SCA girls dominated: 25-13. Karina Bernard and Nayala Tun took the court in the fourth set, substituting Betson and Casimiro, and the Nicaraguans tied the game 2-2 by winning the fourth set again 25-23. With the score at 11-6, Nayala Tun took the court to serve and win the fifth set 15-12.

Libero Briany Staine rotated into the game to help with defence when receiving a serve, but this she hardly had to do in the second set as the SCA girls dominated: 25-10.
Xiomara Quan and Kevanna Sebastian relieved Bevans and Casimiro in the third set, and Nayala Tun took the court to serve for five points, but Shanay Casimiro relieved Sebastian as the Hondurans took the lead to win the third set: 20-25.
Shameika Franklin relieved Betson in the fourth set which the SCA girls also won 25-17, breaking a long two-year drought for Belize in CODICADER female volleyball. The SCA girls did not do so well in their opening game, they lost 0-3 to the girls of Costa Rica’s Liceo Santa Barbara on Tuesday in three sets: 20-25, 16-25 and 19-25.
The girls of Guatemala’s Liceo Canadiense won the gold medal for the championship in five sets Friday evening, recovering from a two set deficit: 28-30, 16-25, 25-21, 25-21 and 16-14, and the girls of Santa Barbara took the silver.
