The undefeated girls of Belize Elementary School and the Orange Walk District champions, the boys of Chan Pine Ridge School, won the national primary schools volleyball championships organized by the National Sports Council at Bird’s Isle on Friday evening, June 6.
The Belize Elementary girls won their second national title, after winning the national football championships in 2012, by dominating the Stann Creek district champions, the girls of Holy Ghost School from the Pomona Valley 25-13 in the first set of the championship final. The Holy Ghost school rallied to make a real fight of the second set, taking it to several match points at: 23-22, 24-23, 25-24, and 27-26 before the BES girls took it away 28-26.
The Chan Pine Ridge boys recovered from a deficit after the Cayo District champions, the boys of Howard Smith Nazarene School of Benque Viejo had dominated the first set: 25-14. The Chan Pine Ridge boys rallied to win the second set 25-20 and took the third set: 15-12.
Charlie Slushier, NSC sports coordinator presented team trophies to the champions, second and third place winners and individual medals to all players. He also presented the individual awards for Most Valuable Player to Allyanah Musa of Belize Elementary and Naim Reyes of Chan Pine Ridge.
The Louisiana Government School girls of Orange Walk Town and the Corozal Methodist School boys won the consolation games for third place.
