Lady Jaguars lead Belize City women’s volleyball

Defending national champions, Lady Jaguars posted their sixth victory as they dominated the Warriors in three sets when the Belize District Volleyball Association’s Division 1 Tournament continued at the Belize Elementary School Auditorium on Sunday afternoon, May 20.

Jaguars’ Coach Allan  Sharp had chosen to give his second string players some court time and they dominated the winless Warriors in three sets.

Tichele Solis, Antoinette Alvarez, Leann Garbutt, and Kimberly Spence led the Jaguar attacks, hammering kills at the net on balls set by Tanesha Encalada and Melissa Williams who also received to keep the ball in play and served with effect to take the first set 25-10.

Crystal Alvarez, Kaylani Reid and Loren Henry led the Warrior counterattack, supported by substitute Keslyn Lizama. But Jaguars’ Alina Scott took the court in the second set blocking and setting the ball to help the Jaguars win the second set 25-19. 

Coach Sharp introduced Leah Waight into the game in the third set. Sharp had held his first string players Babsy Cadle, Sherylee Thurton, Shantell Arnold and Tisha Solis in reserve, but they were not needed because the Jaguars won the third set: 25-10.


The Moen Stars held volleyball clinic for their junior team, the SQ Stars, winning in three sets on Saturday night. Shelmadine Cacho and Marika Zuniga led the Moen Stars’ offensive, supported by Sherlene Johnson and Precelia Hoare hitting and blocking at the net, while Nelissa Ramirez and Rebecca Rath received and set the ball. Kayla Dawson came off the bench to substitute for  Rath as the Moen women won the first set 25-16.

The SQ Stars were undaunted and Sherika Burton and Clara Sabal led their counterattack, supported by Leandra Betson, Krystie Bevans and Jahshema Saunders blocking at the net, while Krystal Bevans received and set the ball. Kelsey Balderamos and Vivianni Avila reinforced the Moen  women, who dominated the second set: 25-13.

The SQ Stars re-enforced their attacks with Shanaye Casimiro, Xiomara Quan and Nayala Tun, but the Moen women also took the third set 25-6.

Second ranked Moen Stars will play a 3-match series in the playoffs against third ranked SQ Stars beginning Thursday, May 24 and Saturday, May 26, to determine who will face the Lady Jaguars in the finals which begin Thursday, May 31
