Kenny Gladden of Scotiabank team won the “A” category road championship, while Isaiah Willacey won the “B” category and Manuel Esquiliano of Truckers Posse won the “C” category of the Weekend Warriors’ Race last Sunday, July 14.
Gladden out-sprinted Derick Smith of the BWS team in 2:12:40 to win the “A” category race, a 49-mile ride from the Crooked Tree junction with the Philip Goldson Highway via the Burrell Boom bypass and the George Price Highway to the finish line in front of Leslie’s Imports in Belize City.
Colin Maheia of the B.C.B./F.T.Williams team was third. Wilbert Jones of the DigiCell 4G team finished fourth, and Warren Coye of Santino’s team was fifth. Vallan Symns of the Cayo Rentals team was sixth.
Maheia’s teammate Mark Gentle led a chase group to take seventh place, while Ronald Sutherland of DigiCell 4G took eighth place. Jim Scott of the Santino’s team was ninth and Kenneth Butler of the BWS team rounded out the top 10.
Gladden had also won the first sprint at the Sand Hill junction to Maskall, with Derick Smith second and Maheia third. They remained in that order for the next two sprints.
Road champion Isaiah Willacey of the DigiCell 4G team clocked 2:21:59 winning the “B” category race, which also started from the Crooked Tree junction. Mark Reid of the Zitro team was second and Amir Gonzalez of Truckers Posse, third.
Willacey’s teammate, Anwar Barrow, won the sprint for fourth place while teammate Michael Phillips of Santino’s team was fifth. Willacey’s teammate, Andrew Ordonez, was sixth and Maurice Kelly of the B.C.B./F.T.Williams team was seventh.
Gladden’s teammate, Eustace Ireland, was eighth; Reid’s teammate, Ian Abraham, was ninth; and Ireland’s teammate Elvis Perez rounded out the top 10.
Reid won the first sprint at the Sand Hill junction, with Kevin Hope second and Amir Gonzalez third.
Willacey won the second sprint at the Kolbe Foundation, with Reid second and Gonzalez third. Gonzalez won the third sprint at Mile 10, with Willacey second and Reid third.
Manuel Esquiliano won the 27-mile “C” category race from CD’s Gas station. Lawrence Craig of the Truckers Posse was second and Nelson Zyden of Medina’s House of Jewelry was third.
Sean Duncan of the Zitro team had a flat but still managed to finish fourth in while Wolrick Thurton of the B.C.B./F.T.Williams team was fifth.
Duncan’s teammate Salvador Alvarado was sixth in and Thurton’s teammate, Wayne Arnold was seventh.
Ernest Olivera of the Medina team was eighth, Truckers’ Valentine Sosa took ninth place, and Sheffield Eck of Truckers Posse rounded out the top 10. Duncan won the first sprint at CD’s Gas with Zyden second and Thurton.
Craig won the second sprint at the Kolbe Foundation, with Duncan second and Zyden third.
Esquilinao won the third sprint at Mile 10, with Duncan second and Zyden third.
