Joel Borland of the Telemedia Cycling Team won the SMART- Leroy Cassasola 54-mile circuit race organized by the Belize Cycling Association on Saturday, February 8.
Borland clocked 2:09:00 from Leslie’s Imports on the George Price Highway to the Hattieville roundabout, via the Boom By-pass to the Philip Goldson Highway junction and back to the start/finish line, untouched by the competition.
His team mate, Gregory Lovell was seconds behind to take second place, while Brandon Cattouse of the C-Ray cycling team finished third.
Brandon Morgan of Benny’s Megabytes team took fourth place while Giovanni Lovell, also of the Telemedia team, pulled in fifth.
Tariq Cano of the Capital City cycling club took sixth place while Allen Castillo of Benny’s Megabytes team was seventh.
Mark Staine also of Benny’s Megabytes was eighth, while Rafael Choto of the Cayo High Road cycling team was ninth. Herman “Hijo” Requeña of the SMART cycling team rounded out the top 10. Requeña’s teammates, Geovanni “Froggy” Leslie and 2013 Cross Country champion, Darnell Barrow, were 11th and 12th respectively.
Greg Lovell won the first station prize at mile 10 on the outward leg, but by the time the race reached the Hattieville prison, Brandon Morgan had taken over the pace. On the return leg, Greg Lovell won the station prize passing the prison and Darnell Barrow won the fourth station prize at Mile 10.
The next major race on the cycling calendar is the 19th annual DigiCell Valentine’s Day Classic on Sunday, February 16. Elite and Master riders will ride 49 miles from Leslie’s Imports to the Hector Silva airstrip on the outskirts of Belmopan and back; while the women and junior riders will ride a 50 mile circuit to mile 26 on the George Price Highway and back.
