Galen Eagles win ATLIB National Basketball Championship

SP 1The Galen University Eagles won their first ever national title in any sporting event organized by the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize, as they asserted their dominance 70-44 over the men of the University of Belize to win the National ATLIB Basketball Championship finals hosted by the San Pedro Junior College at the Angel Nunez Auditorium on Sunday, February 17. 

The Eagles had also won over UB at the ATLIB southern regional tournament.

With Elvis Usher and Jarrell Velasquez each scoring 13 pts, the Eagles led 27-19 in the first half; and  out-scored the UB men 43-25 in the second half as Jamaal Harris, Shelton Defour, Jordan Young-Lamb each scored 11 pts, while Daniel Nolberto and Raul Roches each added nine points and Dijon McNab tossed in a basket.

Travis Lennan hit three 3-pointers as he led UB with 16 pts, while Jamir Flores and Fenton Ross each added six points,  Uhuru McKoy  scored five and Oyinkro Akpobodor tossed in one basket.

The Eagles had blown away the hosts and northern regional sub-champions, the men of San Pedro Junior College: 60-33 in the opening game of the tournament.

Jarrell Velasquez hit a 3-pointer in each half as he led Galen with 16 pts, while Raul Roches rammed home a monster dunk for two of his 12 pts and Jamaal Harris scored 11 pts as the Eagles led 34-8 at intermission.

Elvis Usher hit a 3-pointer as he added seven, and Shelton Defour – six, while Dijon McNab had four points and Jason Badillo and Carlo Burns each scored a basket. Louis Pitterson hit two 3-pointers as he led the island boys with 14 pts, while Franklin Aranda added seven and Charles Richards scored six, Daniel Estell and Alfred Young scored three each.

The UB men advanced to the final by a 58-45 win over the northern regional champions, the men of St. John’s College Junior College.

Travis Lennan hit two 3-pointers as he led UB with 22 pts, while Jamir Flores added 13 pts to give UB a 36-35 lead at intermission.

Daniel Nolberto added 11 pts, Uhuru McKoy scored six  and Jamall Swazo – four, with Kent Welch chipping in a basket for the win.

Terrique Gabb hit four 3-pointers as he led SJC with 17 pts, Kendice “Suba” Williams added 12 pts and Justin Usher added seven. Bryton Codd had four points, Karym Coleman added three and Daniel Sanchez – two.

The St. John’s men won the consolation game for third place 73-70 over the island men. Kendice Williams led with 21 pts and Terique Gabb hit two 3-pointers in each half for 17 pts, while Justin Usher added 15 pts.

Josiah Brown drained in a 3-pointer to add five points, while Bryton Codd  and Trajan Meighan each scored four.  Sanchez added three and Alex Ellis and Karym Coleman scored a basket each.

Alfred Young led the islanders with 17 pts, while Charles Richards hit two 3-pointers to add 16 pts. Franklin Aranda and Louis Pitterson each added 11 pts, Daniel Estell scored 10 pts, and Guillermo Rivero hit a 3-pointer.
