Fabio Carballo of St. John’s College successfully defended his title as National Table Tennis Champion for players under 19 last week, when the Belize Table Tennis Association held the second annual Don Omario Cup Table Tennis U-19 Championship.
Carballo, one of the top table tennis players in the country, triumphed 3-1 over second-place winner Joshua Gegg of Corozal Community College in the championship finals.
Gian Lisbey of St. Johns College ranked third after Gegg eliminated him in the semifinals, and John DelCid of St. Joseph Primary School took fourth place.
Carballo entered the tournament as the third-ranked seed, but he won through to the finals by victories over Maurice Alvarez, Mario Galindo, Amiri Hoare, Joshua Gegg and Gian Lisbey.
Gegg entered the tournament’s semi-finals as the second-ranked seed and advanced to the finals by victories over Denzel Young, Taye Parkinson, and Latrell Solis before his first loss to Carballo.
Gegg fought his way out of the losers’ bracket by winning over Jaylen Nicholson, John DelCid and Gian Lisbey to face a rematch with Carballo in the finals.
Gian Lisbey eliminated John DelCid to win third place, while DelCid, the youngest player in the tournament, had to settle for fourth place.
Harim Ochaeta was ranked the top seed for this year’s tournament, but he did not participate.
BTTA Membership Director Mrs. Janine Carballo and Hector Lopez of the BTTA Executive Committee presented the trophies to the winners and the Championship cup to Carballo.
