The girls of Stann Creek Ecumenical Junior College upset the girls of University of Belize 30-5 to win the basketball championship finals organized by the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize and hosted by the San Pedro Junior College at the Angel Nunez Auditorium on Sunday, February 17.
It was the Ecumenical girls first ever national title in any ATLIB sporting event, all the sweeter as they had lost to the UB girls in the ATLIB Southern Regional Tournament.
Ethel Martinez led the Ecumenical girls with 13 pts, and Jacklaine Arzu added another five points as they led 20-1 at intermission.
Carmita Swaso and Jolene Williams each added four points while Eleanor Martinez and Susie Cabral tossed in a basket each.
UB’s Ashley Elrington scored a free throw in the first half, and she and Ireice Reyes each scored a basket in the second half.
The Ecumenical girls had also blown away the northern regional champions, the girl of St. John’s Junior College, 46-12 in the opening game of the tournament.
Ethel Martinez hit a three-pointer as she led the Ecumenical girls with 16 pts and with a basket from Veronica Arzu they led 18-6 in the first half.
Eleanor Martinez added 13 pts, Jacklaine Arzu tossed in seven and Susie Cabral and Jolene Williams scored four points each. SJC’s Shanee Reid led with six points, while Shenelle Lord and Terrylee Hamilton each scored three points.
The UB girls had advanced to the finals by a 16-5 win over the northern regional sub-champions, the girls of Belize Adventist Junior College, in the second game of the day.
UB’s Ashley Elrington, Viviani Avila and Melba Lewis had each scored four points, while Ireice Reyes and Alvree Mortis each scored a basket. Elizabeth Green scored a basket for the Adventist girls and Jennifer Linarez added three points.
The St. John’s girls won the consolation game for third place over the Adventist girls: 34-5.
Shenelle Lord led SJC with nine points, Shanee Reid and Shantel Castillo added eight each as they led 20-1 at intermission. Terrylee Hamilton scored seven and Leera Carr tossed in one basket. Jennifer Linarez and Neeke Rancharan each scored a basket for the Adventist girls while Elizabeth Green hit a free throw.
