Crooked Tree boys win Belize district softball championship

The undefeated boys of Crooked Tree Government School won the championship finals of the Belize City Primary Schools Softball Competition: 8-4 over the boys of Holy Cross Methodist School of San Pedro Ambergris Caye, at  Rogers Stadium in Belize City on Tuesday, June 12.

Ethan Wade scored the first run for the Crooked Tree boys in the top of the first inning, but the Holy Cross boys soon led 3-1 when Japhet Castillo, Eli Chi and Omar Gonzalo scored runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Crooked Tree boys seized an 8-3 lead when Ethan Wade, Ronald Castillo, Lawrence Banner, Christian Tillett, Jonathan Louriano, Terique Gillett, and Adrian Crawford scored seven runs in the top of the second inning.

The Holy Cross boys tried for a comeback, but Lawrence Banner struck out three batters and allowed only Ryan Mendez to score in the bottom of the second inning to secure the 8-4 win and the championship.

The Crooked Tree boys had advanced to the finals by a 2-0 victory, which eliminated  Belize City sub-champions, the boys of Buttonwood Bay Nazarene Primary School. Ethan Wade and Ronald Castillo scored the two runs for the win.

Buttonwood’s pitcher Brian Pavon struck out four batters to allow no more runs in the next two innings, but Lawrence Banner also struck out three batters and with the rest of the Crooked Tree diamond allowed no runs to score.

The Holy Cross boys had advanced to the finals by eliminating the Belize City champions, the boys of St. Martin De Porres School 4-2 in the second game of the day.

Holy Cross pitcher Ryan Mendez struck out six batters allowing only Glenn Arzu to score for St Martin’s in the top of the first and pitcher Derrick Menzies to score in the top of the second inning.

The Holy Cross boys took over the lead when Nahor Howe, Eli Chi, Christian Orellano and Ryan Mendez scored four runs in the bottom of the second. Mendez also gave no runs in the top of the third and Omar Gonzalo scored in the bottom of the third inning which was not completed before time ran out.

The Crooked Tree boys will go on to represent the Belize District in the upcoming National Primary Schools Softball Championships scheduled for Friday, June 15  at Rogers Stadium.
