Byron Pope of the Benny’s megabytes team won the annual September cycling criterium organized by the Belize Cycling Association and sponsored by the Belize City Council and Bowen & Bowen Ltd on Albert and Regent Streets in downtown Belize City on Sunday, September 15.
Pope clocked 1:15:00 on the 30 laps over the one-mile circuit from the Mule Park by Belize Bank to the St. John’s Cathedral and back to win five cases of Belikin beer and stout from Bowen & Bowen Ltd and the first place trophy. Pope had also won three $25 lap prizes as he led the race at the ninth, 24th and 27th laps.
Erwin Middleton of the Capital City cycling club was second to win three cases of Belikin beer and stout and a trophy, he also won the $25 lap prize on the 19th lap. Joel Borland of the Belize Telemedia team was third to win a case of Belikin beer and a trophy.
Pope’s teammate, mark Staine, had won the first $25 lap prize on completion of the fifth lap he finished fourth to win a trophy.
Mexican rider Manuel Ayala Balam, of the Depredadores team from Chetumal, Quintana Roo, was fifth to also win a trophy.
Jose Choto of the Belikin Western Spirits team was sixth, but he also won first prize in the Masters category, for which he won three cases of Belikin beer and stout and a trophy. Giovanni “Froggy” Leslie of the Santino’s team was seventh, Geon Hanson of the INDECO team from Belmopan was eighth; and Brandon Cattouse of the C-Ray team was ninth.
Barney Brown of the Scotiabank team was second in the masters category for which he won a case of Belikin beer and a case of stout, and a trophy. Dwight Lopez of the BelCal team was third among the Masters, for which he won a case of Belikin beer and a trophy.
Barney Brown also won the Weekend Warriors race earlier in the afternoon, which was 45 minutes riding over the circuit, and then five laps, for which he won three cases of Belikin beer and stout and a trophy. Ernest “Tangalang” Thurton of the Santino’s team was second to win a case of Belikin beer and a case of stout.
Wilbert Jones of the Digicell 4G team was third to win a case of Belikin beer and a trophy. Raymond Hyde of the Santino’s team was fourth.
National junior road champion Oscar Quiros of the Xibalban team is enjoying his last year as a junior rider, having won the 15-lap junior race in 38:15 and the three cases of Real Fruit juices from Bowen & Bowen Ltd and the trophy.
Giovanni Lovell of the Belize Telemedia team was second to win two cases of Real Fruit juices and a trophy, while Pope’s teammate Brandon Morgan was third to win one case of juice and a trophy.
The female riders rode the same course as the juniors, with Kerah Eiley of the BECOL team winning in 42:24 to claim three cases of Belikin beer and stout and a trophy. Her teammate Patricia Chavarria took second place to win two cases of Belikin beer and stout and a trophy.
The BCA also held of number of races for youth and novice riders, with Tyler Terry winning a case of Real Fruit juice in the Youth category, while Andrew Green took second and Darien Anderson was third.
Davonne Pascacio also won a case of Real Fruit juice for a first place finish in the 14-16 category, with Gerson Lovell placing second and Kenan Faber – third.
Andy Faber won a case of Real Fruit juice for a first place finish in the 11-13 category, with Derrick Chavarria second and Patrick Williams third. Derrick Chavarria won a case of Real Fruit juice for a first place finish in the 8-10 category, with Derrick Brown second and Dion O’Brien – third.
