BWSL and Bowen & Bowen win in firms’ basketball

Belize Water Services and Bowen & Bowen both enjoyed wins when the Belize City Firms’ Basketball Competition continued at  Bird’s Isle in Belize City on Saturday night, September 15.

BWSL outlasted Belize Telemedia 46-43 in the first game of the evening. Andrew Gordon led BWSL with 12 pts, and seven boards, but Telemedia’s Lupito Acosta responded with two long 3-pointers to score 10 pts and give Telemedia a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Travis Lennon scored nine points and Ashley Hemsley added seven as BWSL took over the lead 27-24 at intermission.

Devon Lozano scored nine points for BTL and Lennox Cayetano added eight, but BWSL continued to lead 36-33 at the end of the third quarter. Karim Thompson and Benson Matthews added six points each, and six rebounds.

Lindberg “Prince” Graham and Lawrence Young added three points each to give BWSL a 41-39 lead in the fourth quarter, but Jason Lamb tied the score 39-39 with 22 seconds left on the clock, and again at  43-43 with four seconds remaining. BWSL inbounded the ball and Travis Lennon drained in a long 3-pointer just before the final buzzer for the 46-43 win.

The Airport team  blew away Belze Electricity Ltd 77-47 on Friday night. Paul Swasey led the Airport with a monster 33 pts, five boards and Kelvin Gillett added 14 pts, seven boards to lead 16-13 in the first quarter and romped to a 39-25 lead at intermission.

Lloyd Leslie  led BEL with 22 pts, nine boards; Jason Bennett added eight and Leon Young had six points, but the die was cast.

Vince Lamb’s 10 pts and Myron Flowers’ eight helped the Airport secure a 54-39 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Akeem Bermudez added four and it mattered nought that BEL’s Ronald Young, Austin Castro and Jaleel Arnold scored three points each.

The Belize Bank overcame a seven point deficit in money time to win 59-56 over Smart in the second game. Sean Duncan scored 19 pts and five boards to give Smart a 17-16 lead in the first quarter and with Kurt Budd hitting a 3-pointer to add 16 pts and seven boards they led 31-26 at intermission. Alain Lovell’s nine points and Jason Gentle’s eight helped Smart to lead 44-37 at the end of the third quarter.

Dominique Guzman hit a long 3-pointer as he led the Belize Bank with 16 pts, and nine boards.  Chris McGann also hit a 3-pointer to score 12 pts and eight board, while Troy Gabb hit three 3-pointers to also add 12 pts. Divaun Williams and Elmer Herrera followed suite each with a 3-pointer as Williams added six and Herrera and James Gentle scored five points each to secure the 59-56 win.

Ports of Belize also came from behind to upset Atlantic Bank 64-62 in the nightcap. Marcel Orosco led Atlantic Bank with a monster 32 pts and Jermaine “Gumbi” Tillett added 10 pts to lead 17-12 in the first quarter and 32-26 at intermission.

Ports’ Lennox Bowman hit a 3-pointer as he responded with 28 pts, five board, and Maxwell Nicholson, Leroy Forbes, Jason Bradley and Kent Franklin each scored six points as they took over the lead 46-45 at the end of the third quarter.

Linton Broaster scored eight points for the bankers, Eugene Smith added seven and Marciano Leal had five, but Cecil Price’s five points put the Port on top 64-62 at the final buzzer.

There will be no games over the holiday weekend, so the competition will continue on September 28
