Belize’s participation at the VIII Pan American Softball Championships at in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico last week has been a learning experience for the national women’s softball team, which failed to qualify to the second round. The team as did not win a single game in seven outing. and returned home, empty-handed on Monday, August 19.
The Belize women lost 0-7 to Guatemala by mercy rule in 5 innings in their final game last Thursday, August 15, after losing 1-7 to Mexico last Wednesday, 0-13 to Canada on Tuesday and 0-13 to the Dominican Republic on Monday.
Belize got only two hits off Guatemala’s Maria Ramos but did not score any runs, while Belize’s pitcher Francine Salazar gave up 10 hits, on which Guatemala scored a run in the first inning, two in the third and four in the fifth inning.
Belize’s best hitter, Lydia Cacho had a 0.286 batting average in seven time at bat in three games, while Barbara Cadle averaged 0.200, with two hits in 10 times at bat in four game. Lisa Jones averaged 0.182 in 14 at bats in five games while Norecia Frazer averaged 0.1433 in14 at bats in five games. Elaine Humes averaged 0.500 with one hit in two times at bat in two games.
Only Cacho scored against Mexico at the Evelio Rivera Field on Wednesday. Francine Salazar-Hoare gave up four hits, walked two batters and struck out one, before Kenreen Gillett relieved her in the third inning, by which time Mexico had scored two runs in the second inning and two in the third to lead 4-0.
Gillett also gave up four hits and struck out one batter, but Mexico scored three more runs in the bottom of th sixth and Belize did not score in the top of the seventh. The Belize women got only one hit in three innings off Mexico’s Erika Bennett Edleen whose earned run average was 3.27. Dominic Alcoser gave up 2 hits in three innings, while Dianna Castilo allowed no hits in the last inning.
The Canadians hammered Belize 13-0 by mercy rule in 4 innings at the Velio Rivera field on Tuesday afternoon. Sara Plourde struck out 6 batters and gave up only one hit to Norecia Frazer. Canada’sJennifer Yee homered in the bottom of the third inning and the game ws called whenBelize could not score in the top of the fourth inning. Belize’s Kenreen Gillett gave up14 hits as Canada collected 3 runs in the first inning, three in the second and seven in the third.
The Dominican Republic similarly hammered Belize 13-0 by mercy rule at the Pedro Lopez field on Monday. Dhariana Familia Furcal maintained an earned run average of 0.00. She gave up no hits and walked one batter. Norecia Frazer and Jolene Davis both collected hits off relief pitcher Geovanny Nuúez.
In comparison Belize’s Francine Hoare-Salazar developed an earned un average of 6.35 ; gave up 10 hits and walked two batters.
The Dominican Republic scored twice in the first inning, once in the third, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth. Elizabeth Rocha and Geovanny Nuñez homered, as relief pitcher Lanisha Jones gave up three hits and walked two batters. The Dominican Republic scored seven runs in the sixth inning to complete the 13-0 rout.
