The George Price Highway is scheduled to get major upgrades between Belmopan and Santa Elena.
In a joint release issued this week the Inter-American Development Bank and the European Union said that they approved some BZ $65 million in financing for the project, which will span some 19.4 miles and included the Roaring Creek bridge.
The IDB will give a loan of US $27 million, and the EU will provide a grant of €5 million. The Government of Belize will also provide counterpart funding of US$1.5 million.
The project is said to improve connectivity between Belize’s main districts with Central America by cutting travel times and costs. The project will also take into account the road’s resilience to climate change.
The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
“Improved transport infrastructure is vital to the competitiveness of Belize’s agriculture and tourism industries,” said Anakee Jessen, IDB country representative in Belize.
Ambassador Paola Amadei, head of the EU delegation to Belize, pointed out that the EU is the largest supporter of road works in belize, providing some €45 million in funding to rehabilitate over 210 km of road.
