The San Pedro Red Cross held a blood drive this past weekend as part of its continuing effort to build the Ambergris Caye blood supply for residents and tourists.

The drive, which was organized in collaboration with Belize Blood Services and the San Pedro Cancer Society, lasted ten hours on Saturday and saw many willing donors.

During the drive, the organization was able to collect 34 pints of blood for the island’s blood reserve currently being stored at the blood bank in Belize City.
The San Pedro Red Cross also collected more than $300 in cash donations, which it says it will use to support community programs.

The drive started at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and lasted until 7:00 p.m. Donors were able to deposit the life giving substance at several locations around the island, where community volunteers and members from the Belize Blood Transfusion Services Group ensured a smooth process.

The San Pedro Red Cross is already scheduling another blood drive for January and is inviting residents and tourists to join in. The group also held a similar drive earlier this year in June.
