The Rotaract Club of Belize made a donation of 50 school bags filled with school supplies to needy children of Central Christian primary school on Wednesday.
According to Tanya Thompson, Community Service Director for Belize Rotaract Club, the children receiving the school bags with supplies were chosen by the principal and teachers.
Thompson explained that Rotaract contacted the principal from early in the summer to identify the children most in need of the donation so they could have the supplies ready by the start of the school-year. Thompson said that the students who received the school bags range from Infant One all the way up to Standard Six.
Thompson explained that the Rotaract Club has been undertaking this initiative for the last four years. According to Thompson, a different school is selected by Rotaract every year to receive the donations.
Thompson also noted that once a school is chosen the Club engages in initiatives with that school for the entire year until another school is chosen.
Mr.Jermaine Crawford, the Principal of Central Christian School, said after being contacted by Rotaract the school identified the 50 children who they thought were most in need of the supplies and would appreciate them the most.
The principal said the donation was the first his school had received from Rotaract and added that he looked forward to working with the Rotaract in the coming year.
The supplies were distributed during a short ceremony Wednesday afternoon at the Central Christian Primary School compound on Freetown Road with students and their parents in attendance.
