PUP takes aim at UDP party chairman

By Benjamin Flowers, Staff Reporter

The People’s United Party (PUP) is calling on the Government of Belize to remove United Democratic Party (UDP) Chairman, Alberto August, from his post as Chairman of the Board of Belize Water Services Limited (BWSL).

The PUP condemned August for his role in disrupting the May 17th public inquiry, led by the Senate Special Select Committee. During the incident, August and several other UDP operatives, disrupted the Inquiry to the point where the Committee Chairman had to suspend the session to regain order. The operatives also assaulted three members of the media during the incident.

The PUP said that August was “in direct violation of Section 121 (1), (2) of the Constitution of Belize, which speaks clearly on the Code of Conduct of Officers of Statutory Corporations.”

As such, the party wants him removed immediately. The Opposition also condemned the government for allowing Brian “Yellow Man” Audinett, to remain the Mace Bearer of the National Assembly, after he.assaulted the media members during the incident.

The Opposition also condemned, in the strongest, the public display of support that Prime Minister Dean Barrow showed for Audinett in the aftermath of the incident.

The PUP said Barrow’s support, “sent a clear message to the UDP members of the Committee that Audinett was not to be replaced and a tacit approval of the actions of members of his Party during the Senate Hearings.”
