By Marion Ali, Assistant Editor

Police have penalized one of their own for losing the firearm assigned to him and then making up a story about how he lost it.

Police have not named the policeman or given his rank, but state that he reported that the firearm was reported stolen by two persons who assaulted him while doing patrol in the Kontiki area in San Ignacio town.

Police say that the Professional Standards Branch investigated the incident and found him culpable. He was placed on disciplinary action for “lost by neglect, to which he pleaded guilty and was fined the maximum of $200. Police say the officer was severely reprimanded and was ordered to pay $1,500 to the government – compensation for the cost of replacing the firearm.
