Opposition condemns GOB response to new Guatemalan map

By Benjamin Flowers, Staff Reporter

The People’s United Party (PUP) is condemning the government of Belize for not protesting Guatemala’s intention to include Belize as a part of its territory in a new map.

Guatemala announced this week that it plans to produce the map as part of its educational campaign to take the territorial dispute to the International Court of Justice, despite a decision by its congress in April to refrain from printing the map.

Guatemala’s government said that it launched an international tender for any company willing to, for the next 10 years, provide the service spreads and include Belize as the 23rd province on the map, with only a dotted line separating our two countries, on the front cover of Guatemalan passports.

“The PUP strongly rejects Guatemala’s decision, and calls on the Organization of American States (OAS) to intervene immediately in what amounts to no less than an egregious breach of conduct and good faith,” the PUP said. “We call on the Prime Minister, as we have done on multiple occasions to correct the disastrous behaviour of his Foreign Minister (Wilfred Elrington).”

The Opposition also told the Prime Minister that the party intends to register its on protest in the face of GOB’s “continued inaction.” The PUP said it it is prepared to protest to Guatemala, the OAS, Friends of Belize and all stakeholders in the resolution of Guatemala’s unfounded claim.
