After two years, the new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is preparing to open at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

According to the Office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children (SEWC), the new facility is scheduled to open on Tuesday October 27.
The specialized facility will be the first of its kind in Belize and will be structured to accommodate new borns as well as parents.
The SEWC, Kim Simplis Barrow, established the Belize Children’s Trust in 2013 to have the facility built, after a bacterial outbreak at the KHMH caused the death of seven newborns.

Since then the office has been holding fund raising events, such as the annual Fundraising Gala Dinner in aid of the Belize Children’s Trust held at the Old Down Manor in Bristol, United Kingdom, which secured some $300,000 in funds.

The Government of the Republic of China/Taiwan has been instrumental in the construction of the facility and even the Government of Japan donated some $12,000 toward the venture.

Apart from upgrading the facilities, the KHMH has also secured special training for the staff that will operate the facility, to raise the quality of service being offered to Belizeans.
The facility was originally scheduled to be opened in December 2015.
