A massive fire early Sunday morning destroyed several acres of sugar cane near Libertad Village in the Corozal district, way before the scheduled harvesting for that particular harvest.
As a result of the fire, the Sugar Cane Production Committee (SCPC) has since advised all farmers to not burn anymore cane as priority will be given to owners of the cane burnt prematurely. That cane will be delivered to the BSI Tower Hill factory for milling as soon as possible.
The SCPC is also requesting farmers of all three cane associations to pitch in and help deliver the burnt cane so as to preserve the quality as much as possible.
BSI mill has a scheduled stop Monday for four hours to do necessary maintenance work to the machines. The mill will then receive cane only from the affected farmers once it restarts operations on Monday.
