The Belize City Council held its annual flag raising ceremony at the flag monument round-a-bout on Tuesday morning, to commemorate the start of the September celebrations and activities this month.
According to Mayor Darrell Bradley, the significance of replacing all the international flags that would normally be flying with the Belizean flag reflects the City’s patriotic spirit during this time of the year. Bradley added that the ceremony has come to mark the opening of the September celebrations for CitCo and the festive season.
Bradley said while the September Celebrations Committee plans events across the country to celebrate the month, the City does its part by raising the flags to spread the patriotic spirit. The Belize Scouts Association will be responsible for taking down the flags every evening and rising them every at 6:00 a.m. each day, as they always do, Bradley added.
He noted that the flag-raising tradition at the flag monument was started only five years ago and was the brainchild of City Councilor Dion Leslie. Bradley said it was encouraging to see so many people turn out for the ceremony, including young people and even the Belize Police Department.
Bradley said there were about 20 flags raised and the flags will be flown until the last day of September.
