Calling all book lovers

By Benjamin Flowers

The Belize Book Industry Association (BBIA), is inviting authors, aspiring writers and all book lovers to attend a series of activities planned for its annual celebration of Book Week.

Traditionally held in the third week of April, the BBIA’s book week activities are centred around fostering a culture of reading not just for academic purposes but for leisure as well. The association hosts activities in two locations each year, alternating the districts for one of the events and hosting the other in San Ignacio, where the association originated.

The 2018 Book Week celebrations will be held in Caye Caulker on the 18th of April and at the Cayo Welcome Center in San Ignacio on the 20th and 21st of April. One of the largest events planned for this year is the book fair, which will feature local authors showcasing their books, read aloud sessions for the children, face painting and a book exchange courtesy of the National Library service.

The activities in San Ignacio will feature a two-day workshop for authors and publishers about the importance of intellectual property within the book industry. The workshops will be facilitated by a representative from the Belize Intellectual Property Office (BELIPO).

The BBIA will also be at the Image Factory in Belize City on Thursday, April 19, for a special book launching. The books to be launched are for the winners of the 2017 winners of the  Belize Literary Prize competition, which the association has been holding for the past three years. Apart from giving out a cash prize, the BBIA also covers the cost of publishing the works of the winning authors.

At the book launching the association is scheduled to open the 2018 instalment of the competition and announce the criteria for entrance.
