By Alexis R. Milan, Staff Reporter

Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley and Minister of Local Government, Godwin Hulse signed a document on Friday as part of a United Nations Children’sFund (UNICEF) program called the Sustainable and Child Friendly Municipality Initiative geared toward addressing issues affecting children in different municipalities across the globe.

The official signing was held at the Belize Elementary auditorium and students from various high-schools along with UNICEF representatives
were all in attendance for the signing. The ceremony was one of nine as each municipality in the country held simultaneous ceremonies.

“We are talking about involving young people in decision making
specifically ensuring that young people are represented on various municipal committees,” Bradley said about the initiative.

He added that Belize City is very committed to involving young people in a very meaningful way in the planning and decision-making process.

UNICEF representative, Ivan Yerovi explained that the Sustainable Child Friendly Municipalities initiative is being implemented in several dozen countries in thousands of municipalities globally. He
said this worldwide initiative has transformed into a movement and each year is gathering wider support from political leaders, civil
society, organizations and many other entities, who are concerned with the well-being and rights of children.

Yerovi added that they are working along with the Mayor’s Association of Belize to develop a strategy for Mayor’s to collaborate with their municipality on ways to improve the conditions for children in their community.
