American Airlines inaugurated its newest flight route between Belize from Los Angeles on Saturday at the Phillip Goldson International Airport, as part of its expansion of routes in the Caribbean and Latin American region.
Officials from the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) and representatives from American Airlines were on hand for the inauguration. As the plane landed and neared its stop it received its honorary water christening to commemorate its first landing.
The BTB has welcomed the additional route saying it will continue to expand Belize’s growing tourism industry.
As part of its expansion, American Airlines has added six new routes throughout Mexico, the Caribbean and Latin America. This expansion includes Belize, as well as the Grand Cayman, Nicaragua, and Guadalajara and Monterrey in Mexico.
American Airlines is now providing direct flights between Belize and Los Angeles on Saturdays and Sundays on their 737-800 aircraft.
The flight will leave Belize at 8:55 a.m. and arrive in Los Angeles at 1:10 p.m. The Los Angeles flight will leave at 12:30 am and arrive in Belize at 6:10 a.m.
The new flights are expected to continue adding to the country’s growing number of overnight arrivals even surpassing Belize’s record breaking year in tourist arrivals for 2014.
Last year, with the addition of several flights by various airline, including Delta and Southwest airlines, Belize saw increases in the total of overnight and airport arrivals as a direct result of additional flight routes. Belize also had record numbers in cruise arrivals, which helped the country break its previous record for tourist arrivals.
