A 21-year-old Belize City man of a Balan Street address was riddled with a hail of bullets as he walked along Western Avenue on Wednesday night.
Police investigations have confirmed that on Wednesday night around 6:25 p.m., Jason Cortez was walking on Western Avenue when a lone gunman approached him and shot him multiple times to his chest, abdomen, back and buttocks.

Inspector of Police Fitzroy Yearwood said preliminary investigations have led cops to believe that Cortez was stalked and followed by the gunman due to the quickness with which the incident unfolded.

After Cortez was shot, he tried to run away from his killer but he only ran a short distance then fell in a yard at the corner of Electric Avenue.
Police said that their quick response to the scene resulted in officers being able to transport Cortez to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. He died at 6:44 p.m., while undergoing treatment.

One person has been detained for questioning in connection with this latest shooting. Yearwood says he hopes the investigation results in charges being brought against the individual.

When asked whether the shooting of 23-year-old Alrick August last Wednesday night on Western Avenue is related to the Cortez shooting, Yearwood said that he would not want to speculate on the matter.
Cortez’ murder is the 16th of 2017, according to Reporter’s unofficial count.
