Police have launched two separate murder investigations after two bodies were found in different municipalities on Thursday morning, starting with a body found floating in the Belize River near the Banana Bank Lodge in Cayo and another in the San Cas plaza in Belize City.

On Thursday at around 8:30 a.m., police found the decomposing body of 33-year-old Cotton Tree resident, Isau Perez floating in the river after they responded to a report of the body. According to police, Perez was found with multiple stab wounds in his chest and neck.

Belmopan police have indicated that Perez was last seen socializing with friends at a popular bar in the Riviera area of Belmopan. It is believed that he was killed there and his body taken to the river and dumped.
A post mortem examination conducted on the scene revealed that Perez died as a result of multiple stab wounds to his body.

Earlier on Thursday morning, around 2:00 a.m., the body of a homeless man identified as 60-year-old Michael Garbutt was discovered on the San Cas Plaza compound with injuries to the back of his head and jaw.

Police confirmed that Garbutt’s death is being treated as a murder investigation, pending the outcome of an autopsy report to determine his cause of death.
The early morning discovery was made by an on-duty security guard who was in the process of conducting a routine patrol. He told police that he found Garbutt lying face up.

Police investigations into both incidents continue.
