A 17-month old baby girl is clinging on to life by a ventilator in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Ward’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after she was brutally beaten and sexually abused in Maskall Village off the Old Northern Highway, Belize district on Wednesday.

The toddler’s mother, a young woman in her early 20’s, left the child in a young man’s care at her Maskall village home on Wednesday morning to come to work on the outskirts of Belize City. Reliable information reaching the Reporter is that normally the mother would take the baby across the street to her babysitter, who is said to be related to the same young man.

On Wednesday, however, the child was still asleep when the mother left home and she left instructions with the young man to take her over when she woke up.
Those instructions were apparently never followed and sometime in the afternoon the young mother received a phone call that her baby was suffering from seizures. The child was rushed to the KHMH on Wednesday evening, where doctors discovered that the toddler had been brutally raped and beaten so badly about her head that she needed immediate surgery to drain the brain of massive hemorrhaging. There were also other severe wounds on her back, legs and arms.

Police told the media on Thursday that they, along with personnel from the Human Services Department were summoned to the KHMH on Thursday where they were informed of the baby’s wounds.

Doctors at the KHMH have done all they could, but the prognosis does not look good at this time. As of press time, reports indicate that the child may be brain dead.
The main suspect, the same person in whose care the mother left the child, is detained at the Ladyville police station pending investigations.
