Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow, Special Envoy for Women and Children, and wife of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, returned to Belize on Wednesday, June 20, after being hospitalized in Miami, Florida for a heart condition.
On Friday, May 18, Mrs. Barrow experienced cardiac problems while undergoing therapy for breast cancer.
Doctors are saying the trauma to her heart muscles is serious.
In an interview with local media on Friday, June 8, Prime Minister Barrow said:
“While there is no cure for heart failure, we are told that the damage to the heart muscle – which is what the combination of the chemotherapy and the radiation caused – is possibly reversible to a degree.
“The doctors are saying: Look, if she’s lucky and the heart function can get up from the ten to fifteen percent of capacity – where it now is – to about thirty percent; that makes things far more manageable.
“So that’s the hope that being young and in the normal course, fairly strong, that together with medication and time will help to at least reverse to some degree the damage which, I repeat, unfortunately can’t ever be cured.”
While in Belize, Mrs. Barrow will be under the care of Dr. Adrian Coye.
Mrs Kim Barrow, in an official statement issued Wednesday, thanked the Belizean people for all their continued support and prayers.
