Police investigating burnt human remains found off Coastal Road

The Crimes Investigation Branch in Belize City is heading an investigation to determine the identity of the human remains found in some bush near mile 10 on the Coastal Road over the weekend.

The discovery was made around 4:55 p.m. on October 28th, by a farmer who was in the immediate area, which was approximately 30 feet from off the road.

According to police, due to the advanced state of decomposition neither the sex nor the identity of the deceased could be established. It also appears that the body was set on fire after it was placed at the location.

On Monday, ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch (CIB) said police are treating the incident as a death investigation and are looking at all missing persons in the area as well as pleading to the public to report anyone who has gone missing.

Myvette claims that no personal items were recovered from the scene or anything which could establish the victim’s identity. Police say the death doesn’t seem recent.

The remains were processed and transported to the Southern Regional Hospital and later shipped to Belize City for examination by a pathologist.

On Wednesday, police indicated that the investigation hasn’t progressed much.
