Major crimes down by 12.7% countrywide

The number of major crimes has generally fallen up to the end of July, compared to the same period of 2012.  And the police say that the decrease is as much as 12.7%.

Even better than that is that the number of murders has gone down by 23.8% over the same period last year. The information was disseminated at the National Security Minister’s monthly meeting, and Commissioner of Police, Allen Whylie, said this accomplishment is due to loyalty and hard work of the Department’s policemen and women.

And the decrease is countrywide, with the Western Region still showing the least number of crimes.  The Belize District, and specifically Belize City, continues to be the leader with the highest number of serious crimes committed.  The only area that showed an increase in serious crimes committed is the Belize District, more specifically Belize City, with 111 cases as compared to 95 at the same time last year.

The number of murders up to this same period countrywide stood at 67 while in 2012 it stood at 88. Armed robbery also showed an impressive decrease down by 43%. Rape and burglaries were also down, but carnal knowledge shot up by 69% and theft by 6.9%.
