Lady Jaguars and Jaguars Men Win In Belize City Volleyball

The defending national women’s volleyball champions, the Lady Jaguars and the Jaguars men’s team both enjoyed victories when the newly formed Belize District Volleyball Association continued its Division 1 tournament at the Belize Elementary School auditorium on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22.

The Lady Jaguars triumphed over their arch rivals Moen Stars in a hard fought duel that went to five sets on Saturday evening. Babsy Cadle Tichele Solis, Sherylee Thurton and Shantell Arnold led Lady Jaguars’ attack, hammering home kills at the net, while Bobby Dee Usher and Tanesha Encalada served with effect and libero Tisha Solis rotated into the game to scoop up returns and dig up saves to win the first set 25-16.

The Moen Stars were out to avenge the 3-0 humiliation of their junior team,  the SQ Stars, and they counterattacked furiously, with Shelmadine Cacho, Tahera Ahmad, Sherlene Johnson and Emma Hoare hammering spike attacks at the net. Cacho and Ahmad also put some umbrella blocks on the Jaguars’ attacks, and Precelia hoare and Kimberly Dawson served with effect, while libero Vivianni Avila rotated into the game to dig up saves and set the ball for renewed attacks as they took the next two sets 25-15 and 25-20.

The Stars seemed to have the Jaguars with their backs to the ropes, as the Stars need only to win the fourth set to clinch the victory, but Alina Scott rotated into the game to relieve Tanesha Encalada and the Jaguars took the fourth set 25-19 to tie the series: 2-2.

Marisol Zuniga entered the game to relieve Sherlene Johnson and Ashli Habet also entered the game, while Tanesha Encalada re-entered the game for the lady Jaguars, who soon seized a 10-3 lead over the Stars and won the fifth set 15-7 to clinch their third consecutive victory in three outings.

The SQ Stars enjoyed their first win by default, when the Warriors did not sufficient players to start the game and were obliged to forfeit.

The SQ Dragons upset the defending men’s champions the Scorpions in Saturday’s nightcap. Star hitter Keith Castillo led the Dragons’ attack, while Alex Evans, Brian Castillo and Fenton James also got in spike attacks at the net. Kevin Thompson and Chris Smith served and set the ball for the attacks to win the first set: 25-20. Ernest Broaster, Adrian Garcia and Gustavo Moratoya strengthened their attacks as they also took the second set 25-22.

Determined not to go down 3-0, the Scorpions fought for a comeback with Germaine Audinett, Ean Galvez, Jamal Galvez and Arvid Arnold leading the counterattack at the net supported by Anthony Wagner and Oscar Arnold who served, received and set the ball for the attacks, with Sheldon Arnold rotating into the game as libero, and they won the third set 25-23. The Dragons had to go to extra points to clinch the fourth set and the match: 27-25.

The Jaguars men enjoyed their third consecutive victory when they outlasted the Rebels 3-1. Karym Coleman, Shane Gentle, Joseph Enriquez and Derrick Morgan led the Jaguars’ attacks at the net, supported by Albert Bradley and Jaleel Lino serving and receiving, and with Keegan Ack rotating into play as Libero, they took the first two sets: 25-18, 25-18.

Tariq Campbell, Elton Anderson, Orel Leslie, Victor Hernandez led the rebels counterattacks supported by Jared Thompson and Khalid Encalada, and they took the third set 25-20, but the Jaguars had help from Trevor Muschamp and Jaryl Mariano to win the fourth set 25-14.
