A woman was savagely murdered on Caye Caulker on Wednesday and her husband, who is wanted for questioning by police, disappeared in the predawn hours, Caye Caulker Police reported.
Around 12:15 p.m., police visited the Estella Street home of Julia Jennie Moran, 28, located in the Black Neighbourhood of Caye Caulker. The door to the house was locked and officers reported that they had to break open the only door to gain entrance.
Once inside, officers observed the lifeless body of Moran. She was lying on a bed and was covered with some sheets and blankets. Her body had multiple chop and stab wounds.
Police said that they recovered a machete, a knife and some papers that they believe are evidence that could assist them in their investigation of Moran’s murder.
A neighbour called police, after he observed that the house was locked up and he had not seen his neighbour, nor her husband, after he had heard a loud quarrel between the couple during the early hours of the morning.
According to police, neighbours reported to them that around 1:00 a.m. they heard loud noises coming from the Moran’s home. And around 3;00 a.m., her husband, Serjio Moran, a Guatemalan national, was seen leaving the house with the couple’s infant child.
Neighbours of Julia Moran said that she has been living for years in a most abusive relationship.
Police Sergeant Delfin Zuniga said that Serjio is the prime suspect in their murder investigation.
Zuniga said that police have made checks on the island but Moran is nowhere to be found.
The only information about him that police received is that he and his child were last seen in the area of the Caye Caulker water taxi area.
Caye Caulker Police believes that Serjio Moran intends to flee Belize’s jurisdiction and have issued an all-points bulletin for the apprehension of Moran, who was employed as a chef on the island.
