Kendra Mejia, 21, became the country’s latest traffic fatality when the minivan she was driving careened off the George Price highway and slammed into a ditch, flipping several times on Tuesday night.

Mejia was heading from Benque Viejo del Carmen to San Ignacio at around 11:15 that night to pick up a family friend when she was reportedly blinded by the lights of an oncoming vehicle and lost control of her vehicle, which swayed across the highway before it struck the ditch, suffered a blowout and overturned near the Calla Creek junction at mile 70.

Mejia was killed on impact, and her brother, Hector Mejia who was travelling with her, suffered cut wounds to his feet, right knee, left eye and upper lip. He has been treated and released from the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).

Another passenger, Lizzemy Gutierrez, 17, Kendra’s sister-in-law, broke her hip and both ankles. She is in a stable condition at the KHMH.
