Two men travelling on a motor cycle on the Phillip Goldson Highway were killed while on their way to Ladyville near mile six after a collision with a pickup truck.
According to Assistant Superintendent Chris Noble, Rural Executive Officer 31-year-old Duane Pelayo Jr. and 48-year-old Gerald Gillet collided with a Belize Tourism Board (BTB) truck just before 6:00 p.m. on Friday and died on the spot.
The motorcycle the men were riding was extensively damaged and the truck also received some damages. The driver of the BTB truck received some injuries as well.
Noble said it remains unclear whether or not the men were wearing helmets or whether any of them was intoxicated, but said the post-mortem examination should provide some clarity.
Noble cautioned motorists about speeding in that area of the highway and advised all drivers to be patient on the road.
Police are still investigating what may have caused the accident. According to witnesses who spoke to the media on Friday, the cycle had just overtaken a truck, hitting the rear-view mirror or the cycle before collided with the BTB truck coming from the opposite direction. After making impact the cycle catapulted into the air, tossing the men from the bike and landing, crumpled on the highway, the witnesses said.
