Suicides are not normally news in Belize, but three attempts of suicide last weekend in Independence Village, two of which were successful, coupled with the cirsumstances that led to them, caught our attention.
Police are still delving into the circumstances that led to the two suicides – one which has left a mother grief-stricken after her 13 year-old daughter took her own life, and the other that left a wife dead and a husband critical after he attempted to take his own life.
In the first instance around 9 p.m. last Friday, Maria Rosaria Caal, 19, a resident of Bella Vista Village, Stann Creek hung herself after a domestic quarrel with her husband, Jenaro Caal, 22.
The Reporter has learned that the young couple got into an argument after Jenaro received a text message from another woman and Maria happened upon the message. The two, we were made to understand, got into a bitter dispute. Jenaro reportedly left the house and went to visit a relative, but when he returned home several minutes later, he discovered his wife hanging in the house. On Monday, presumably regretful over their argument and his wife’s suicide, Jenaro also attempted to hang himself, but was cut down before he lost consciousness. He was taken in a critical condition to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he continues to recover.
The second incident occurred around 9:25 p.m. on Saturday when Lydia Pop, a 13-year-old student of Red Bank Village, hung herself, reportedly after a “discussion” with her mother.
From what we have learned, the child arrived home that night notably upset. She and her mother got into an exchange, the topic of which remains undisclosed. The girl reportedly grew more upset and went and hung herself. She, according to our source, was not the only child in the household.
